Croatia was ranked in 26th place out of 162 nations in the Institute for Economics and Peace’s (IEP) 2014 Global Peace Index. The ranking system is based according to 22 indicators that gauge the absence or the fear of violence. Whilst Croatia has improved its ranking, 111 countries have gone backwards since 2008. Europe still is the safest region, with 14 out of the top 20 nations.
Iceland, Denmark and Austria topped the 2014 list, whilst at the bottom Syria replaced Afghanistan as the world’s least peaceful country.
