5,000 free portions of bakalar to be dished out in Split on Christmas Eve

SPLIT, 19 December 2023 – Thousands of portions of bakalar (dried cod) will again be served for free in cities across Croatia in what has become a traditional Christmas Eve gesture.

On Badnjak (Christmas Eve), members of “Chefs of Mediterranean and European Regions” (ŠKMER) and numerous volunteers will distribute 5,000 free portions of the bakalar na crveno in Split, Grad Split confirmed today.

The event will be held under the patronage of the City of Split, the Split-Dalmatia County, the Split and Split County Tourist Board, and the cooks will clean 220 kgs of bakalar, 700 kgs of potatoes and prepare other ingredients to be cooked in the famous large “teca” which has a diameter of 2.6 meters and was made 18 years ago at Split’s Škver.

“Split with love” was started 18 years ago by the founder of the ŠKMER association, Miro Bogdanović, and the then mayor of Split, Zvonimir Puljić.

The distribution of bakalar will begin on Sunday at 12:00 PM at the Fish Market. It will be carried out by 70 Split volunteers, and along with the cod, citizens will receive a small package of fritule prepared by the members of the DES organization.

The festive program will commence at 11:30 AM, hosted by journalists Franka Jović Tonkli and Ivana Šilović. The City Choir Brodosplit and the musical ensemble Providenca will also be performing.
