SPLIT, 21 December 2022 – Thousands of portions of bakalar (dried cod) will again be served for free in cities across Croatia in what has become a traditional Christmas Eve gesture.
After a two-year break, bakalar will again be dished out to people on Prokurativa in Split on Saturday during the event ‘Split with love’, ŠKMER said.
On Badnjak (Christmas Eve), members of ŠKMER and numerous volunteers will distribute 5,000 free portions of bakalar, which is being prepared for days in the association’s kitchen, at Peškarija in Split.
The event will be held under the patronage of the City of Split, the Split-Dalmatia County, the Split and Split County Tourist Board, and around 30 cooks will clean bakalar, potatoes and prepare other ingredients to be cooked in the famous large “teca” which has a diameter of 2.6 meters and was made 17 years ago at Split’s Škver.
“Split with love” was started 16 years ago by the founder of the association, Miro Bogdanović, and the then mayor of Split, Zvonimir Puljić.
For the past two years, the distribution of bakalar could not take place due to the epidemiological measures that were in force.
