ZAGREB,  7 May (Hina) – The City of Split on Tuesday celebrated its day and the day of its patron saint, St. Domnius, with a series of events including the solemn mass in the cathedral on Tuesday morning and a procession through the city.

Several thousand people took part in the procession from the cathedral to the Riva waterfront.

The local authorities extended their best wishes to residents of Split and numerous guests who flocked this Adriatic city on the occasion of its Day to attend the festivities.

Over 60 various events, including religious gatherings and entertaining shows are taking place in Split on the occasion of the Day of Saint Domnius this year.

Saint Domnius was a 3rd-century Bishop of Salona and was martyred with seven other Christians in the persecutions of Emperor Diocletian.

The tradition holds that Domnio came to Rome with Saint Peter and was then sent by Peter to evangelize Dalmatia, where he was martyred along with 8 soldiers he had converted.

Saint Domnius became the Split’s patron saint, and the city’s cathedral, the Cathedral of Saint Domnius, was built-in the mausoleum of Diocletian itself, the emperor who martyred him.
