VIDEO: Croatia 2:0 Serbia

Croatia went to the top of the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification UEFA Group A with a 2:0 win over Serbia in front of 36,000 Croatian fans at Maksimir stadium on Friday night.

Croatia took the lead when Ivica Olic and Mario Mandzukic combined to capitalise on a defensive mistake from Serbia’s Manchester City defender Aleksandar Kolarov in the 23rd minute. 14 minutes after Mandzukic’s strike, Croatia doubled their lead when Olic chested in a Darijo Srna cross to go into the break 2-0 up.

Croatia goal keeper Stipe Pletikosa made sure that Croatia kept a clean sheet with three fine saves in the second half as Serbia pressed for a goal to get back in the match.

“It’s a victory for all of us, the whole of Croatia. It is what we wanted. We have taken a huge step towards Brazil. We waited for the mistake and made the most of it today. We are going to celebrate,” said goal scorer Olic.

“We showed today what we have been talking about all along. Congratulations to all the guys, this victory will stay in our memories forever. Thanks to everyone who came, and those who supported from home. We are going to celebrate. I wont go to sleep until the morning,” said Mandzukic after the 2-0 win.
