The City of Zagreb announced on Wednesday a tender for the selection of contractors for the construction of a pool in the western suburb of Špansko.

This marks the fulfilment of a promise made decades ago, as the western part of the city will finally have a swimming pool, Grad Zagreb reported.

“This is one of our announced major strategic projects, and its construction will commence this year,” emphasised the Mayor of Zagreb, Tomislav Tomašević. “It won’t just be a sports pool but also a recreational and social centre much needed in the western part of Zagreb.”

All project documentation has been prepared. The anticipated start of construction is in the spring of this year, with a deadline for completion and facility furnishing set at 18 months from the contractor’s initiation into the project.

The estimated value of construction and equipment is around 18 million euros, excluding VAT.

“In accordance with the obtained building permit, the construction involves an indoor pool with accompanying facilities: a sports and recreational pool, a small educational-rehabilitation pool, sauna, fitness, a small corrective room, and a grandstand for 300 spectators. The building consists of one underground and two above-ground floors,” explained the Deputy Mayor of Zagreb, Luka Korlaet.

In addition to the Špansko pool, the City of Zagreb is in the process of realizing other strategic sports projects, such as the reconstruction of the stadium in Kranjčevićeva Street and the renovation of the Sports Hall.

Equally important is the revitalisation of the recreational-sports centre Jarun, which began with the long-awaited renewal of Aleja Matije Ljubeka, aiming to promote cycling and pedestrian traffic, as well as public urban transport. Investments in the sports infrastructure of the City of Zagreb will continue in the future.
