The Chicken takes place in 1993 in occupied Sarajevo and focuses on a six-year-old girl Selma, whose father sends her a chicken as a birthday present. The film was fully shot in Zagreb, in Croatian arrangement. It was written and directed by Una Gunjak, the director of photography was Matthias Pilz, editor Anja Siemens, and composer Bernd Schurer. The producer is Jelena Goldbach from the German production company Zak Film Productions, with Siniša Juričić from Nukleus film as the Croatian co-producer. The film was co-funded by the Croatian Audiovisual Centre and City of Zagreb.

The Chicken has so far won over 20 festival awards and it has been selected for the international short film competition at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival, one of the most important independent film festivals in the USA, founded in 1984 by Robert Redford. (HAVC)
