Pre-Lenten festivities to be held in Samobor on 2-13 Feb

ZAGREB, 24 Jan (Hina) – Traditional Shrovetide carnival will be held in Samobor from February 2 to 13, and the “Free Carnival Republic” will be declared in this town west of Zagreb, which will turn into a place of a two-week party led by masked groups.

The carnival spectacle will begin on February 2 at 7 p.m., said Mayor Petra Škrobot, who will hand over the keys to the city and declare the “Free Carnival Republic” on that date.

Škrobot said the Samobor carnival was one of the oldest carnival celebrations in Croatia and one of the biggest tourist events in the continental part of the country.

“We are proud of the carnival tradition that has been going on in Samobor for 198 years. We keep customs, but we adapt to the times we live in, so we adapted the carnival program to that,” said the mayor.

From February 2, the streets of Samobor will be transformed into an arena of entertainment, with carnival bands full of merrymakers.
