Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modrić has been named the new captain of the Croatian national team on Monday…

Modrić replaces Darijo Srna who retired after the recent EURO 2016 in France, and will lead Croatia in their qualifying campaign for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia which starts next week.

Croatia coach Ante Čačić confirmed on Monday as the squad gathered in Zagreb ahead of next Monday’s qualifier against Turkey.

“It is a nice feeling, I am proud. I want to thank the coach for showing faith in me and I hope that I justify the decision,” the new captain said on Monday.

“It is always special when the national team gathers, we had a phenomenal atmosphere at EURO, and considering that it is the same side here I believe that will continue. We need to show again the good things from France,” Modrić added.
