A new era is set to begin as Zagreb’s tram network expansion project moves ahead.

The City of Zagreb has announced a tender for selecting contractors for the construction of a tram track as part of the Sarajevska cesta construction and reconstruction project.

The planned project involves building a tram track spanning 2.25 kilometres from Avenija Dubrovnik to the Ranžirni kolodvor, including four tram stops, a turning point, and a ZET facility.

Additionally, to accommodate possible future expansion of the tram track into Vatikanska ulica, the project includes switches at the intersection with Vatikanska ulica.

“This marks the first expansion of the tram network in Zagreb in 20 years and marks the beginning of another one of our strategic projects,” said Mayor Tomislav Tomašević.

“This significant undertaking opens up a new southern entrance to the city, connecting neighbourhoods in the eastern part of Novi Zagreb to the tram network,” added the Mayor.

Construction of the tram track will proceed simultaneously with the construction of Sarajevska cesta, featuring two lanes and pedestrian-cyclist paths on both sides.

Assuming a successful contractor selection process, work is scheduled to commence at the end of summer, with an expected duration of 12 months.

The estimated value of the construction works for Sarajevska cesta, including municipal infrastructure and the tram track, amounts to 25 million euros.

“We are continuously working to improve public transportation. This week, the long-awaited reconstruction of the Mihaljevac tram turning point began, along with the simultaneous construction of a new bus terminal, expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Procuring 60 new trams will also contribute to enhancing public transportation, with the first set to start operating by next spring, possibly even earlier,” said Mayor Tomašević.

“Our aim is to provide better, higher-quality, and safer mobility in Zagreb,” concluded the Mayor.
