One of the most significant statues in the Croatian capital Zagreb is the Kumica Barica, located at Dolac Market.

Throughout history, Dolac has changed its locations, but it settled into its current spot between Ban Jelačić Square, Kaptol, and the Upper Town in 1930.

Back then, it was one of the most modern marketplaces in all of Europe.

Tourists make the trek up the famous stairs to Dolac, pausing at the top of the stairs to snap a photo with the famous Kumica Barica statue.

This artistic masterpiece by academic sculptor Stjepan Gračan was created to honour all the ladies, or “kumice,” who have kept this place vibrant since its inception selling their fresh produce.

Adorned with an apron tied around her waist and a basket on her head, Kumica Barica has stood there since 2006.

The statue, which was named Barica by the locals, was modelled on Đurđica Jančec – a friendly ‘kumica’ who has been selling produce from a stall at the market for over 50 years.

Đurđica, who is from Hrašće, in Novi Zagreb, has been an iconic figure of the markers.
