Croatia’s First Female General Honoured in Afghanistan

Garašić, who is a gender issues adviser for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) security mission in Afghanistan, was presented with a medal for achievement for her work in integrating women into the special police unit in the ISAF operation by General Asadullah Sherzad, the General Commander of the Special Police Unit in Afghanistan.

General Sherzad congratulated Garašić on receiving the medal, pointing out that the Special Police Training Centre, in which Croatia next year plans to send an advisory team, is already at full capacity with future special police unit members. Garašić, who has a law degree, started her career in 1994 and has held a range of responsibilities over the past decade, including adviser with the Croatian representation to NATO and the EU, and Assistant Advisor to the President of Croatia for Defence matters.
