2020 US Open: Borna Ćorić starts with straight-sets victory, Petra Martić advances

NEW YORK, 31 August 2020 – The second and final Grand Slam of the year has got underway in New York, and on there were two Croatian players featuring on opening day.  

First up on court was 27th seed Borna Corić. Ćorić started his US Open campaign with a comfortable straight-sets victory against Spain’s Pablo Andújar.

Ćorić blasted down 12 aces to beat Andújar 7-5, 6-3, 6-1 to advance through to the second round. 

Ćorić, who had no aces hit against him, was in good form, especially with his service game as he won 75% points on his first serve.

In the women’s draw, 8th seed Petra Martić came back from a set down to beat Tereza Martincova from the Czech Republic in the first round later on Monday. 

Martić lost the opening set 7-5 but came back strong to win the next two sets 6-2, 6-4 to move into the second round. 

Tomorrow, the tournament’s 31st seed and former US Open winner, Marin Cilic, will play American Denis Kudla, whilst 41-year-old Ivo Karlović will play his first-round match against experienced Frenchman Richard Gasquet.

In the women’s draw, Donna Vekić, who is the tournament’s 18th seed, will play Czech Republic’s Krstyna Plíšková.
