ZAGREB, 30 Oct (Hina) – The Dubrovnik county’s public institution for managing the protected environment informed last Thursday that a Mediterranean monk seal was noticed off the Danče beach near the historical centre of Dubrovnik.

The public institution has received several reports from the general public about the animal being noticed in the sea off Dubrovnik.

It also says that a citizen managed to make a video footage of this animal, which is believed to be the world’s rarest pinniped species.

According to some estimates, there are just 700 Mediterranean monk seals in the world.

Local Denis Dilberović spotted the Mediterranean monk seal whilst out fishing at 7:55 a.m. and filmed it (video below).

The pubic institution is hopeful that this good-natured animal will find home in the Dubrovnik area and is asking anyone who sights it to forward a photo or video to: [email protected], [email protected] or to the Biom Facebook page and register it via the CroDolphin application to help contribute to protect the rarest seal in the world and the most endangered marine mammal in Europe.
