VIDEO: Croatia’s Arijana Podgajski shines in Miss Universe preliminary competition

Croatia’s Arijana Podgajski has shined with her overall performance at the preliminary competition of the 71st Miss Universe pageant which took place in New Orleans on Wednesday night. 

20-year-old Arijana, who hails from Krapina in northern Croatia, introduced herself during the opening number in an eye-catching Portia and Scarlett dress.

The avid reader and animal-lover, who is majoring in economics and management at university, then wore a stunning dark pink evening gown designed by Sherri Hill.

At the end she showed off her National Costume dress designed by Mina Petra and which was inspired by traditional national costumes of Zagorje. 

The base of the dress is an off-white hand-woven 90-year old linen fabric and features a hand-painted design by academic painter Antonia Maričević which shows what makes the area of Zagorje so beautiful.

Almost 90 women from around the world are vying for the Miss Universe title, through the process of personal statements, in depth interviews and various categories including evening gown & swimwear. 

The 71st Miss Universe competition will be take place on on January 15  at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, Louisiana.
