Diego Maradona’s second goal against England at the 1986 FIFA World Cup was voted by fans as the FIFA World Cup Goal of the Century in a poll.
After collecting the ball just inside his own half, Maradona expertly beat four defenders on his mazy run before rounding goalkeeper Peter Shilton and slotting the ball in the back of the net.
Not quite the same occasion or opposition, but an equally impressive goal was scored this weekend by Croatian footballer Kristijan Brekalo.
Brekalo, playing for NK Bilogora ’91 against Dinamo Predavac in the inter-county Croatian league, collects the ball well inside his own half and goes on a run, beating five defenders before slotting home to give his side a 2-1 win.
