Tunnel Connecting Dalmatian Hinterland To Makarska Riviera To Open In June

A tunnel connecting the Imotski region in the Dalmatian hinterland with the Makarska Riviera is set to open for traffic in June this year. The 4,249 meter Sveti Ilija tunnel will pass through the Biokovo mountain, shaving off significant travel time for those in the hinterland heading to the picturesque Dalmatian coast.

The Ministry of Transport has advised the government to introduce a ‘pay as you go’ system at the tunnel, which looks like it will be the case, according to Vecernji list. A price of 20 kuna (just under 3 euros) a car has been banded about. The tunnel reportedly cost over 500 million kuna (close to 100 million USD) to construct.
