Šibenik, 7 July – A sudden storm off the coast of the Croatian island of Kaprije led to a serious boating accident this morning when a catamaran capsized, throwing nine people into the sea.

The Šibenik Maritime Police Station said that it received an emergency call at around 11.35am reporting the incident.

The accident occurred during a period of strong and sudden weather conditions, which caused the vessel to overturn.

According to police reports, there were nine people on board the catamaran at the time. Among them were seven Swedish nationals, one German national and one Croatian national.

Nearby sailors aboard a sailing yacht witnessed the incident and acted quickly to assist those who had fallen into the sea.

Police officers arrived shortly after and transported all individuals safely to shore using a police vessel.

Two foreign nationals were taken to the Šibenik General Hospital to receive medical attention.

The cause of the accident is currently under investigation. Police from the Šibenik Maritime Police Station will be conducting a full inspection of the incident to determine the exact circumstances that led to the catamaran’s capsizing.

The prompt response by both fellow sailors and emergency services helped ensure a swift rescue, preventing what could have been a much more serious outcome.

Further updates will be provided by police as the investigation progresses.
