In a twenty-year perspective, Croatia will face a shortage of around 400 thousand workers, as stated by the governor of the Croatian National Bank, Boris Vujčić, in his presentation at last week’s consultation of the Croatian Society of Economists in Opatija.

The trend of increasing demand for workers has continued this year, according to the Croatian Employment Service (HZZ), as reported by N1.

Most sought after: salespersons, cleaners, and waiters

The most sought-after professions in the first ten months of this year were salespersons, cleaners, and waiters.

These three professions account for 17 percent of the total number of sought-after workers. HZZ data also indicate that this year, the highest demand for workers was in the manufacturing industry, education, and in the activities of health care and social work. The needs for workers in these four sectors constitute 41 percent of the total demand.

The greatest demand for workers is naturally recorded where the population is highest – in the City of Zagreb and the Split-Dalmatia County.

Shortage of construction workers

“On the Adriatic coast during the summer season, there is a shortage of professions related to tourism such as chefs, waiters, bartenders, room attendants, cleaners, salespersons, pastry chefs, butchers, bakers, etc. Throughout the year, medical nurses, health laboratory technicians, and pharmaceutical technicians are lacking on the Adriatic, which is also true for inland parts of the country,” says the HZZ.

Construction worker shortage

In many continental counties, there is a pronounced shortage of construction professions such as bricklayers, carpenters, painters and decorators, upholsterers, ceramicists, reinforcing workers, welders, roofers, floor layers, insulators, sheet metal workers, stonecutters, carpenters, electricians, plumbers, heating and air conditioning installers, drywall installers, construction machine operators, motor vehicle drivers, etc.

Where the manufacturing industry is developed, there is often a shortage of locksmiths, metalworkers, turners, and CNC operators. Geographically, there is an extended shortage of auto mechanics, auto body repairers, auto electricians, auto painters, and automatonicians.

Even 600 agencies employ foreign workers These days, the Moj Posao portal announced that an analysis of the labor market in Croatia shows that in the first three quarters of this year, more than 250,000 job ads were published, which is 4.2 percent more than in the same period last year.

Since some ads were published on multiple platforms, a more detailed analysis reveals that 198,000 unique job ads were published in the first nine months of this year.

They emphasize that it is important to note that the employment of foreign workers often goes through alternative channels, for example, through agencies for the import, employment, and accommodation of foreign workers, of which there are more than 600 in Croatia. According to HZZ data, there are currently 111,979 unemployed people in Croatia, N1 writes.
