The Most Visited Tourist Destination in Croatia in 2015 is…

The popular city of Dubrovnik, on the southern Dalmatian coast, is the most visited destination in Croatia this year…

Based on the number of tourist arrivals, Dubrovnik is the most visited Croatian tourist destination. In the first 9 months of 2015 an impressive 822,542 tourists visited the famous walled city. The largest number of tourists to visit Dubrovnik arrived from the UK, followed by USA, Germany, France and local tourists from Croatia.

Another milestone was hit by Dubrovnik earlier this month. On 2 October 2015 the city recorded its 3,000,000th overnight stay, hitting the number 20 days earlier than last year.

“In terms of arrivals we are the number one destination in Croatia, and 3 million overnight stays we reached 20 days earlier than 2014. For these type of results you need to have vision and belief in people to make growth possible,” said Dubrovnik Mayor Andro Vlahušić at a press conference announcing the city’s excellent results.

Dubrovnik has big plans to make the city an all year round destination and recently launched ‘Project Winter’, a 5-year programme aimed at attracting tourists out of season.

“Our aim is to approach a half a million overnight stays, which is around 120,000 and 150,000 arrivals. That means on average that everyday for four months 1,000 tourists will arrive and stay for four days. We will open public debate on the measures that we will introduce and we are looking for support from all of the stakeholders,” said Vlahušić.

Features of ‘Project Winter’ include the introduction of a winter Dubrovnik Cards, which allows discounts for all activities which are part of the winter festival, incentives for those in the tourism business to create out of season attractions, and subventions for tour operators bringing groups to the city over winter.
