Stari Grad on Hvar up for best filming location in Europe award

Stari Grad on the Croatian island of Hvar is one of the finalists of the EUFCN Location Award 2022, the annual prize for the best European filming locations organised by the European Film Commissions Network (EUFCN). 

The EUFCN announced the five finalists for the Best Filming Location award with Stari Grad on Hvar, which was the location for the film How I Learned to Fly, among the top five, the Croatian Audiovisual Centre said. 

This year the winner will also de decided by public vote.

The 5 finalists are:

Brissago Islands for Dawn Chorus – Ticino Film Commission (Switzerland)

Chiliadou beach za Triangle of sadness – Hellenic Film Commission (Greece)

Portsoy for Peaky Blinders (Season 6) – Screen Scotland (Scotland)

Schlosshotel Kronberg for Spencer – Film Commission Hessen (Germany)

Stari Grad for How I Learned to Fly – Filming in Croatia (Croatia)

How I Learned to Fly was filmed in Stari Grad on Hvar in September and October 2020 as part of the Filming in Croatia incentive program. It went to cinemas in February of this year, where it reached a figure of 250,000 viewers at the regional level (out of which about 34,000 in Croatia).

Ankica Jurić Tilić, the Croatian co-producer of the film, on finding out the news about entering the finals of the selection for the best location, said: “Our whole team is very satisfied with this choice of EUFCN, and as for me personally, I must say that Stari Grad is one of the top 5 world locations, so my personal choice coincides with the opinion of the jury. How I Learned to Fly is a beautiful warm story that reached the hearts of many, and Stari Grad, the island of Hvar and its people had a significant contribution to it.”

Voting closes on Jan. 31st, 2023. The winner of the EUFCN Location Award 2022 for Best European Filming Location of the year will be announced at the European Film Market 2023 in Berlin.
