Beach Polo coming to Rovinj

The picturesque town of Rovinj, which is located on the western coast of the Istrian peninsula, will host an international beach polo tournament in May…

Rovinj tourist company Maistra announced on Tuesday that Rovinj will host the ‘Beach Polo’ event from 12-15 May 2016. The 4-team international event will feature players from India, Argentina, Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Croatia, as well as over 50 Argentine horses.

Traditionally the sport of polo is played on grass, but an adopted format will see sand replace the grass and the game played on the beach. The 70×40 metre playing ‘field’ will be created at Porton Biondi beach in Rovinj, which has a great view of the old town.

“Rovinj has everything needed to organise perfect polo events – good weather, highly motivated sponsors and good cooperation of the local community and the international organising team. Rovinj is a beautiful place, but it also has a reputation as a luxury destination and will certainly attract the right audience,” Uwe Zimmermann, President of the organising committee of the Beach Polo tournament said.

The four-day event is expected to attract a number of visitors to Rovinj from abroad.
