Zagreb has taken an important step in modernising its public transport network with the introduction of ten new low-floor trams – the first new additions to the city’s fleet in 15 years.

By the end of this year, a total of 20 newly contracted trams will be in operation, while delivery of a further 20 is scheduled for 2026. Plans are also in place to purchase an additional 40 longer trams, which will significantly improve the quality of service and encourage more citizens to use public transport in their daily commute.

The new trams are 20.8 metres long and can carry up to 115 passengers. They are fully accessible for people with disabilities and equipped with modern features including video surveillance, USB charging ports, and passenger counting systems. Each tram has a lifespan of 35 years.

Zagreb’s public transport company, ZET, is financing the modernisation largely through EU funds, particularly the National Recovery and Resilience Plan 2021–2026 and the Competitiveness and Cohesion Programme 2021–2027.

Alongside the purchase of new trams and buses, ZET is investing in the reconstruction of tracks, switches, and the construction of new tram lines.

These measures represent a major step forward in creating a more comfortable, safe, and reliable public transport system for the city.
