by Srecko Mavrek
Last Sunday. the theater company Kolarin performed the award-winning play MARA FJOČICA, written by Jozo Lovrić Jadrijev and directed by Paolo Tišljarić, in a beautiful setting on the square in front of the Konavle church and museum in Čilipi.
The organizers were KUD Čilipi and the Konavle Municipality Tourist Board. The play was watched by about 500 spectators, who enthusiastically applauded and laughed at the witty actors.

“This theatrical performance would definitely delight our emigrants and could be shown in all Croatian centers around America and everywhere in the world where our emigrants live. This is a universal story with a lot of humor in the everyday life of our people in small towns across the Adriatic, and that’s why we should find ways and means so that this comedy can cheer up our expats around the world, who would surely enjoy this beautiful cultural event. Perhaps the Ministry of Culture could consider financing their performances around the world where expatriate Croats live, and the City of Dubrovnik and tourism companies could sponsor and use their tour for promotional purposes,” says Ane Stražičić Rodriguez (Ane Mljećka).

Josip Lovrić’s comedy “Mara Fjočica” is directed by Paolo Tišljarić, for whom this is already his fourth collaboration with KD Kolarin. The author wrote Mara Fjočica in the late seventies, and it was performed in the Dubrovnik theater in the early eighties. Because of attracting great interest from the audience, so it was compared to Stulli’s Kata Kapuralica.
That is why in 1983 it was filmed in Piles for state television, as another piece of Dubrovnik’s ambient theater. It has been repeated several times in recent years on HTV, so even younger generations could see it. Lovrić always emphasized that drama as a form should be written primarily for reading while staging it can only be an additional achievement.

It is probably for this reason that the dramatic lines in Mari Fjočica are repeated without any indication of who narrate them. In this irresistible comedy, Lovrić, in a sympathetic way, portrays the Dubrovnik resident Mara Fjočica, who, despite the jealousy of her linguistic neighbors, marries the retired captain Cvijet, thus creating an authentic image of Dubrovnik then, but also today, in which different generations of viewers will recognize themselves.
