ZAGREB, Dec 20 (Hina) – The Institute of Croatian Language and Linguistics (IHJJ) has published an online edition of the Dictionary of the Croatian Kajkavian Literary Language at kajkavski.hr.

On the occasion of the 350th anniversary of the publication of the first print dictionary of the Kajkavian Croatian literary language, “Dictionar” (1670) by Juraj Habdelic, and the 280th anniversary of the printing of the most comprehensive Kajkavian dictionary, “Gazophylacium” (1740) by Ivan Belostenec, the IHJJ has launched a digitised online edition of all previously published volumes of the historical Dictionary of the Croatian Kajkavian Literary Language, lexicographically prepared by the Department of Croatian Language History and Historical Lexicography and co-published with the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU), the IHJJ said in a press release.

The IHJJ recalled that HAZU had initiated the development of the Dictionary of the Croatian Kajkavian Literary Language in the mid-20th century at the suggestion of writer Miroslav Krleza and sculptor Antun Augustincic.

Based on a selection of printed and manuscript sources, the dictionary presents the linguistic treasure of the Kajkavian Croatian literary language from the 16th to mid-19th century, including works of Kajkavian dialect literature until the mid-20th century.

The dictionary was published in 240-page volumes, and three volumes make up a book. The first volume was printed in 1984, and to date 14 volumes with more than 50,000 entries have been published, in alphabetical order from A to S.

“The Dictionary of the Croatian Kajkavian Literary Language is one of the fundamental works of Croatian historical lexicography,” the IHJJ underscored in the press release.

The Institute has published a digitised version of the printed volumes of the historic Dictionary of the Croatian Kajkavian Literary Language at the kajkavski.hr website, publicly available and free to search online.
