Nikola Tesla’s birthday to be celebrated in Gospić with ‘Tesla Power of Lights’ spectacle

GOSPIĆ, 8 July 2020 – Tesla Power of Lights to take place in Gospić to celebrate Nikola Tesla’s birthday

On Friday, July 10, Croatia and the world will mark the 164th anniversary of the birth of one of the world’s greatest minds, Nikola Tesla, and a real spectacle is being prepared in his hometown of Gospić this weekend.

For three days in a row – on Friday, Saturday and Sunday – July 10-12 – “Tesla power of Lights” will be held on the main town square after dark in Gospić.

From 9 p.m., a spectacle of light will show not only all of Tesla’s merits to humanity, but also enable visitors to imagine that night back in 1856, when Tesla was born in the small village of Smiljan near Gospić.

As part of the lighting spectacle, visitors will be able to see a laser show, extraordinary light effects that will spread the sky all the way to Smiljan, and all the buildings in which Tesla lived or worked will be specially lit in the evening. Also, for the youngest ones, an Interactive panel will be set up on the square, with the help of which children will laser paint the devices in the children’s park.

“All visitors are invited to walk the streets of the city, where the famous inventor, electrician and physicist left a big mark. This is certainly the biggest celebration of Tesla’s birthday in the world and that is why everyone is invited to Gospić on Tesla’s birthday when the light in Tesla’s honour will emerge from the darkness in the centre of Lika,” organisers said.

Cultural and children’s program

On Saturday, July 10, at 10 a.m. in Jasikovac, children from the Pahuljica kindergarten will listen to the fairy tale of the Society of Our Children with the story “Nikola – a boy from Smiljan”, after which an art workshop will be held.

On the same day at 12 o’clock in the Memorial Centre, the exhibition “When I was a boy” will open, and the documentary part of this exhibition will be placed on city lights, ie billboards, so citizens will be able to see fragments of the exhibition.

This is a popular, educational exhibition that deals with the second half of the 19th century, ie the period when Nikola Tesla stayed in Smiljan before he went abroad. The aim of the exhibition is to promote Nikola Tesla, the Nikola Tesla Memorial Center, Smiljan and Gospić by evoking anecdotes of Tesla’s childhood, mentioning his famous contemporaries and presenting the history and culture of this area.
