A new maritime-passenger terminal has been inaugurated in Vela Luka on the island of Korčula, marking a significant development for the coastal town.

The new terminal boasts four berths, including one 150-meter berth, two 70-meter berths with 22-meter-wide ramps, and one 40-meter berth. The water depths along the port range from 8 to 13.5 meters.

Additionally, the terminal provides 18,685 square meters of hinterland space with parking for 350 cars, three bus stops, four taxi stands, and 20 parking spaces, along with necessary manoeuvring areas. Facilities include ticket counters, waiting areas, public restrooms, two catering establishments, and a space for port operators.

The inaugural vessel, Petar Hektorović, received a warm welcome, with performances by local cultural groups enhancing the celebration.

The newly constructed port is the result of the recently completed EU project by the County Port Authority of Vela Luka, with a total investment of €14.7 million, €10.2 million of which was co-funded by the European Union from the Cohesion Fund.

The previous ferry terminal, built in the 1970s, was designed for smaller ferries and no longer met the demands of increased maritime traffic, larger vessels, and additional routes. The expansion of the existing terminal was deemed impractical, leading to the decision to relocate the port to a new location.
