‘Moja domovina’ named most significant Croatian song of past 80 years

The song Moja domovina has been officially recognised as the most significant Croatian song of the past 80 years.

The honour was awarded at a ceremonial event recently marking the 80th anniversary of the Croatian Composers’ Society (HDS).

Written by Zrinko Tutić and Rajko Dujmić, with arrangement by Nikša Bratoš, Moja domovina is widely regarded as one of the most powerful musical symbols in modern Croatian history.

Zrinko Tutić, a renowned author, composer and producer, has been instrumental in shaping Croatian popular music since the 1980s, creating many of the country’s most influential songs.

The late Rajko Dujmić (1954–2020), a celebrated composer, producer and long-time member of Novi fosili, left behind a body of work that defined generations of listeners. Moja domovina stands among his most enduring and meaningful compositions.

Released in 1991, at a pivotal moment in Croatia’s history, the song quickly transcended its role as a musical project. It became a unifying anthem, expressing solidarity, resilience and national identity, and offering hope during times of uncertainty.

In a statement, HDS said the award was intended to highlight a work that has had a greater impact than any other on Croatia’s musical and social landscape.

Founded in 1945, the Croatian Composers’ Society has spent 80 years representing, promoting and protecting Croatian composers and their copyright.

This anniversary award reflects not only the legacy of one song, but also the enduring role of music in shaping Croatia’s cultural identity.

The group of singers who made up Croatian Band Aid to sing the song, consisted of stars of the time like Doris Dragović, Oliver Dragojević, Jasna Zlokić, Danijela Martinović, Sanja Doležal, Meri Cetinić, Dino Dvornik, Aki Rahimovski, Matko Jelavić, Emilija Kokić, Severina, Arsen Dedić, Zorica Kondža, Boris Novković, Jasmin Stavros, Ivo Amulić, Vlado Kalember, Krunoslav Slabinac, Ivo Robić, Gabi Novak, Tereza Kesovija, Tajči, Josipa Lisac, Zvonko Špišić, Dragutin Mlinarec, Đuka Čaić, Zdravko Škender, Ivica Šerfezi, Ljupka Dimitrovska, Dalibor Brun, Milo Hrnić, Mišo Kovač, Davor Gobac, Stanko Šarić, Zdenka Vučković, Jura Stublić, Mladen Bodalec, and Ljiljana Nikolovska.
