ZAGREB, 8 March (Hina) – Međimurje has been named a Green Destinations region at the ITB Berlin, the world’s biggest tourism fair, and has won the silver Green Destination award, which makes this northern Croatian region the first Croatian region and the world’s fourth region to join the Green Destinations certification programme.

Međimurje County said the recognition was a result of years of work of the county authorities and the local tourism board on creating sustainable tourism content.

Green Destinations is a nonprofit organisation cooperating with 200 destinations in more than 80 countries around the world. It enjoys exceptional quality recognition among partners and tourists around the world and develops sustainable and responsible tourism in line with UN principles and goals of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.

The award was accepted at the ITB Berlin fair by Međimurje County head Matija Posavec.

Posavec noted that tourism development strategies in Međimurje were oriented towards sustainability, promotion of the rich natural heritage in the area between the Mura and Drava rivers, revitalisation of the local cultural heritage, quality regional wines and food and other local products.
