ZAGREB, 21 September 2020 – Ivan Rakitic (32) has played his last international for Croatia.

The Sevilla midfielder has said goodbye to the Croatia national team, the Croatian Football Federation (HNS) confirmed on Monday.

“Saying goodbye to the Croatian national team is the most difficult decision in my career, but I felt that this was the moment when I had to break and make that decision. I enjoyed every game I played for my homeland, and unforgettable moments from the World Cup will remain among my favorites,” Rakitić said, before adding.

“I am convinced that we still have a great team with a bright future ahead. I wish my friends and teammates all the sports luck in the world for the upcoming challenges, and they will have the biggest fan in me.”

Rakitić, who earned 106 caps for Croatia and scored 15 goals during his career, talked about his decision with Zlatko Dalic, HNS president Davor Suker, and captain Luka Modric, and in the coming days, he will address the public with a statement.

Born in Switzerland to Croatian parents, Rakitić played for Switzerland at youth level but decided to represent Croatia at senior level. He made his debut for Croatia in 2007 and represented the country at UEFA Euro 2008, UEFA Euro 2012, the 2014 FIFA World Cup, UEFA Euro 2016 and the 2018 FIFA World Cup, where he won a runners-up medal.
