HNS reacts to EU Court Super League verdict

The Croatian Football Federation acknowledges the decision made by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in the ‘Super League’ case.

Yesterday, the European Court of Justice said that UEFA and FIFA contravened EU law by stopping the formation of a Super League. Today, the HNS made a statement about the decision, below is the statement in full:

HNS fully supports UEFA and other football stakeholders who have expressed maximum support for the existing European sports model, the football pyramid that ensures openness, solidarity, and participation in competitions based on sporting merit.

These values are emphasised in the judgment of the European Court of Justice, as endorsed by UEFA’s simultaneous role as the organiser of competitions and the authorising body. Additionally, the judgment did not give the green light to a project like the so-called Super League but pointed out deficiencies in UEFA’s authorisation process, which UEFA has since corrected through amendments in 2022.

The reaction of the football family is crystal clear – alongside UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin, the presidents of the ECA (European Club Association), the associations of European leagues, the European fans’ association (FSE), and the players’ association (FIFPro Europe) immediately stood, demonstrating that all football stakeholders – clubs, leagues, fans, and players – fully support the existing model that ensures the further development of football across Europe.

The Croatian Football Federation aligns itself with this strong stance of the European football family, and we are deeply convinced that any idea aiming to organise a closed competition or a competition where participation is not based on sporting results but rather on names or wealth will never be accepted within the European sports model.
