Gymnastics World Cup: Christina Zwicker and Tin Srbić win gold medals for Croatia

Croatian gymnasts Christina Zwicker on the beam and Tin Srbić on the horizontal bar have won gold medals at the World Cup in Szombathely.

Zwicker, from the ZTD Hrvatski Sokol club, won her first medal in her fourth final, and convincingly, with 12,800 points ahead of Latvia’s Elina Vihrova (12,250) and bronze medalist Czech Aneta Holasova (12,100).

The second Croatian finalist on the beam, Tina Zelčić (17), another gymnast coached by Marko Brez, took seventh place with a score of 11,800 points.

Just moments later, Christina also performed in the finals on the ground floor, finishing in eighth place with 10,700 points.

“I’m overjoyed. My first medal at a World Cup and immediately gold. I have no words. The atmosphere in the hall was great, there was even an audience, although I didn’t expect there to be given the whole situation. But it was really great, everyone was cheering for everyone and I was really surprised,” Zwicker said after winning gold.

Christina’s gold is the 30th medal for Croatia in women’s gymnastics.

Tin Srbić also won the gold medal in the horizontal bar. In his 20th final at a World Cup tournament, he won his 14th medal and the seventh gold overall.

He celebrated with 14,650 points and stood on the podium alongside silver medalist Milad Karimi (14,150) and bronze medalist David Vecsernyes.

This was Tina’s first international appearance after a year and winning the world silver medal in Stuttgart in 2019, but the break didn’t bother him at all.

“I am very happy that I did a good exercise in the finals because we did not perform for a year because of this whole situation with the pandemic. There was a little more nervousness than usual, but everything I agreed with the coach, I managed to do in the finals, and here, another gold is there. Let’s move on, preparations for the European Championship and the Olympic Games will follow, Tin said briefly.
