11 January 2019 – Defender Dejan Lovren will miss Croatia’s opening Euro 2020 qualifier against Azerbaijan after he was handed a one-match International ban.

UEFA handed down the punishment on Friday for the Liverpool defender’s comments he made on social media after Croatia’s victory in Zagreb over Spain in November in the Nations League.

“Lovren posted a video on Instagram where he appeared to brag about elbowing Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos and made insulting comments about the Spain team following the game on November 15. He also told reporters after the match that Spain were ‘rude on the pitch’ and bad losers,” Daily Mail writes.

Croatia beat Spain 3-2 after Tin Jedvaj scored in the dying moments. After the match, Lovren went live on Instagram to share his thoughts after the match but according to UEFA he breached the  11. (2) of the Disciplinary code 11, the Croatian Football Federation confirmed.
