Croatian Film Up for European Oscar

Vinko BresanFor the first time since 2004, a Croatian film is up for a European Oscar…

Not since Arsen Ostojić’s A Wonderful Night in Split (Ta divna splitska noć) nearly a decade ago, has Croatia had a contender for the prestigious European Film Academy award, but this weekend it was announced that Vinko Brešan’s hit comedy The Priest’s Children (Svećenikova djeca) is up for an award in the newly created ‘Best European Comedy’ category.

The Priest’s Children becomes just the third Croatian film up for a European Oscar, after Fragments: Chronicle of a Vanishing (Krhotine, 1991) and A Wonderful Night in Split (2004). The Priest’s Children, written by Mate Matišić and directed by Vinko Bresan, is a story about a young priest on a Dalmatian island who, in order to increase the birth rate in the village, begins to punch holes in condom packets. The film had the most successful opening in 22 years in Croatia.
