Zadar

The New York Times have included one Croatian city in on its list of seven world cities that offer the best walking tour experiences.

Zadar has been ranked on the list alongside Paris, Marrakech, Seoul, Sydney, St. Louis, and Rio de Janeiro.

“A walk, slightly over 3 kilometres long, takes you on a journey through a time period that spans almost all phases of Croatian history. And it is a long history, dating back to the 9th century BC, when the Liburnians settled this peninsular part of Croatia on the spectacular Dalmatian coast,” they described to readers.

“Start your walk in the northwest part of the peninsula at the Sea Organ, which consists of a set of 35 pipes located beneath a 70-meter section of the city’s seafront promenade known as Riva. Awarded the European Prize for Urban Public Space in 2006, the Sea Organ plays beautiful dissonant melodies while the Adriatic Sea splashes against the stone and pushes air through the pipes underneath, transforming the promenade into an invisible, ethereal orchestra,” they described.

Greeting to the Sun

After that, they advised their readers to take a walk by the Greeting to the Sun and around the northeastern corner of the Old Town. They then mentioned the City Bridge and the New Gate, entering the Old Town and exploring Narodni Square and Kalelarga.

The tour continues with a visit to the Church of St. Simon and Peter Zoranić Square, and then recommends a visit to Pet Bunara Square, followed by a trip to Queen Jelena Madijevka Park.
