Croatia to face Serbia for place in Davis Cup final

MADRID, 1 December 2021 – Croatia will face Serbia for a place in the final of the Davis Cup after they beat Kazakhstan 2-1 tonight.

With the match level at 1-1 after both singles matches, Novak Djoković and Nikola Ćaćić put Serbia through by winning the doubles match 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.

Croatia go into the semi-final clash in great form with three wins in a row. Vedran Martić’s team won Group D with wins over Australia (3-0) and Hungary (2-1).

Croatia then beat Italy 2-1 in their quarterfinal match in Turin to move into the semi-finals.

One of Croatia’s finds so far in the Davis Cup Final has been Borna Goja. Goja, who is ranked 279th in the world, has beaten two much higher ranked opponents to set up victories for Croatia against Australia and Italy.

Marin Čilić has regained some of his vintage form and can beat anyone on his day, whilst Martić has the luxury of having world no.1 doubles team in Nikola Mektić and Mate Pavić in his squad.

A lot will ride on Gojo in the semi-final with Djoković a big favourite in his singles match.

Meanwhile, Serbia had a much more difficult path. They finished second in Group F after beating Austria (3-0) and losing to German (2-1).

Other results went their way and they advanced through to the quarterfinals where they beat Kazakhstan on Wednesday.

In the singles Serbia rely heavily world no.1 Djoković. Dušan Lajović, Miomir Kecmanović and Filip Krajinović have all played in the singles during the finals. Djoković and Ćaćić are likely to team up in the doubles.

Croatia and Serbia meet on Friday in Madrid with the first match starting at 4 p.m. CET.
