Aquatika in Karlovac becomes first Croatian institution to join Global Network of Water Museums

10 June 2019 – Aquatika – the freshwater aquarium and museum of rivers in Karlovac has joined the Global Network of Water Museums.

Aquatika, designed on a plot size of over 8,000 square metres, was the first of this type of aquarium in Croatia and in Europe when it opened in 2016.

The Aquarium represents flora and fauna of Croatian rivers and lakes, the geological past, traditional culture and the history of the basin of four Karlovac rivers.

Visitors can see the richness of life in rivers and lakes and more than a hundred freshwater fish species, out of which 40 are endemic.

Aquatika is the first Croatian institution to join the network which is under the umbrella of UNESCO’s International Hydrological Programme (IHP).

The new IHP initiative aims to reconnect people and water in all of its dimensions.

Margarita Markusic Kulas, who is head of Aquatika, said everyone involved in the project was extremely proud of becoming a part of the prestigious Global Network of Water Museums.
