New Mexican restaurant opens in Split

El Gancho Split

Split has welcomed a new addition to its dining scene with the opening of El Gancho, a Mexican restaurant that opened its doors on Christmas Eve, 24 December.

Located at Trumbićeva obala 13, El Gancho is open daily from 1pm to 10pm and offers an extensive menu inspired by Mexican cuisine, combining familiar street food favourites with more elaborate dishes.

As Dobra hrana writes, the menu features four taco varieties, including vegetarian tacos, chicken tacos with pico de gallo, birria beef tacos, and Baja shrimp tacos with prawns, pineapple and pickled onion.

Guests can also choose from tostadas (vegetarian or chicken), flautas – rolled and fried tortillas filled with chicken or prawns – as well as nachos topped with minced beef, beans, corn and cheese.

A pastrami burrito is also available.

Beyond tortilla-based dishes, El Gancho serves pozole, a traditional Mexican soup made with chicken, corn and cabbage.

The wider menu includes tuna tartare with mango, grilled tuna with corn and black beans, chiles en nogada (baked peppers filled with minced meat), and birria beef rib royale, a slow-cooked beef rib served with corn purée.

Desserts continue the Mexican theme with churros served with caramelised banana cream and dulce de leche espuma, as well as sweet tacos featuring caramelised peaches, white chocolate and vanilla ganache, corn ice cream and citrus espuma.

Guests can also order sweet tacos filled with dark chocolate mousse, chilli ganache, or coconut and mango cream.

El Gancho also offers a selection of tequila and mezcal-based cocktails, along with classic hot and cold drinks.

The wine list includes Croatian varieties such as Malvasia, Grk and Pošip, as well as sparkling wine and fuller reds like Plavac Mali and Syrah. Beer options include Zlatni Pan, Desperados, Sol and Corona, alongside a range of spirits.
