A new pilot project introducing night trains from Zagreb will launch on 11 October, providing late-night and early-morning services every Saturday and Sunday.

The initiative aims to increase mobility, particularly among students who spend weekends in the capital attending cultural, social and sporting events.

By offering safe return journeys during the early hours, the project seeks to promote safer, more accessible and sustainable public transport options.

The night trains will connect Zagreb Glavni kolodvor (Main Station) with several nearby towns and cities, including Dugo Selo, Zaprešić, Zabok, Krapina, Jastrebarsko, Karlovac, Velika Gorica, Sisak, Ivanić-Grad and Križevci.

Below is an overview of the new weekend services:

The night train project complements the Government’s initiative for free train travel, introduced on 1 January 2025.

The programme provides free, unlimited travel for full-time students, covering journeys between their place of residence and study, as well as occasional trips across Croatia.

Currently, around 23,800 students use train transport under this scheme.

Part-time students can also benefit from the “Indeks vrijedi više” offer, which gives a 50% discount on all one-way and return tickets.

In addition to students, children, pupils, pensioners and those aged over 65 are also entitled to free travel.

Croatian Railways Passenger Transport (HŽPP) continues to record a steady increase in passenger numbers. In 2024, around 24.6 million passengers travelled by train, and the number is expected to exceed 26 million in 2025.

This growth is also driven by the ongoing modernisation of the fleet — currently, 69 new low-floor trains are in service, with 20 more expected by the end of 2028.
