Croatian swimmer Dina Levačić conquers Alcatraz swim

Croatian long-distance swimmer Dina Levačić has successfully swum from the notorious Alcatraz prison to the San Francisco shore.

The route, measuring just over three kilometres, may not appear daunting at first glance, but it is considered one of the sport’s iconic swims due to powerful currents, unpredictable winds and choppy waves.

On the day, the water temperature was a relatively mild 18°C, making conditions favourable for the seasoned open-water swimmer.

“This swim is one of those that every long-distance swimmer dreams of doing once they start in the sport. I am happy I had the opportunity to complete this legendary course, both from a sporting and historic perspective.

But celebrations will have to wait until I finish the more demanding swim around Angel Island in two days,” Dina said after completing the challenge.

The upcoming Angel Island swim poses a greater test. Stronger currents and tidal shifts, which can last from four to as many as eight hours, make it far more unpredictable.

“Angel is more demanding because of the currents. The tides can vary significantly, but the sea temperature is now ideal, around 16 to 18 degrees – this is the warmest time of year,” she added.

Having ticked off the famous Alcatraz crossing, Dina’s focus now shifts to Angel Island, where she is preparing to take on one of the Bay’s most respected endurance swims.
