ZAGREB, 23 Sept (Hina) – The Croatian association Croatia Sacra Paulistana held a lecture in São Paulo on opportunities for living and working in Croatia and announced a Croatian language course.

The event, titled “Have you ever thought about living in Croatia, the land of your ancestors?”, was attended by around 90 people over the weekend.

“The turnout was high. People are interested in Croatia and the language,” Maja Kvaternik Fernandes Leite, head of the culture department at Croatia Sacra Paulistana and Croatian language lecturer, told Hina on Monday.

During her lecture, “Introduction to the Croatian Language”, she also announced that a language course would be held at the association’s headquarters, founded in 1951. Participants will meet there twice a month for in-person lectures, with two further sessions held online.

Kvaternik Fernandes Leite, who teaches Croatian at Mackenzie University in São Paulo, has already this month started a Croatian language course for children at the association, accompanied by cultural and musical activities.

“We want to bring our home to life with the voices of children,” she said.

According to estimates by Croatia Sacra Paulistana and the Society of Friends of Dalmatia, around 100,000 people of Croatian descent live in Brazil, particularly in São Paulo, where Croatian immigrants arrived in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Dubravka Sidonija Šuto, member of the Croatian Government Council for Croats Abroad and representative of Croatia Sacra Paulistana, gave a lecture titled “Life in Croatia”. She presented programmes and incentives of the Croatian government for emigrants and their descendants to those planning to study, work or do business in Croatia.

São Paulo also hosted the South American Croatian diaspora gathering in March, held for the eighth year on the continent. At the time, the Croatian Embassy in Brazil reported a growing interest in acquiring Croatian citizenship and passports.
