Zagreb has officially launched its new public bicycle-sharing system, named Bajs, with Mayor Tomislav Tomašević and his deputies Danijela Dolenec and Luka Korlaet marking the start of the service today.
From today, 500 bicycles are available at 40 stations across the city, with the network set to expand rapidly in the coming months. By the end of October, there will be 2,000 bicycles at 180 locations, with capacity to add a further 1,000 if required.
The four-year contract, worth €9.3 million plus VAT, covers not only the purchase and installation of bicycles and stations, but also the development and maintenance of the user app, an operator system, and regular servicing to ensure smooth operation.
The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
“The uniqueness of Bajs is that it has been designed as a complement to public transport. It will offer a much greater number of stations and bicycles, wider availability, and higher coverage. At least 95% of bicycles must be in operation at any given time,” said Mayor Tomašević.
The pricing is set to be very affordable: €0.50 for rides up to 30 minutes, with subscriptions available at €5 per month or €30 per year.

Stations across the city
Stations are strategically located along public transport lines, near schools, sports facilities, and in densely populated neighbourhoods. The aim is to reduce car use in the city, thereby cutting traffic congestion, greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, and noise.
Like other forms of public transport, the Bajs system will be subsidised from the city budget. During its first year, the service will be closely monitored, analysed, and adapted based on user needs.
Joining European capitals
With the launch of Bajs, Zagreb has joined a growing list of European capitals that have successfully integrated bicycle-sharing schemes into their urban transport networks.

The system is designed to make sustainable travel easier, greener, and more accessible for residents and visitors alike.
From today, citizens can register and manage their rides through the new website bajs.zagreb.hr or via the official mobile app, which also includes a map of all station locations.
