Croatia has recorded the highest rise in fish and seafood prices in the European Union over the past year.

As Poslovni.hr reports, despite its long Adriatic coastline and a strong fishing tradition, prices for fish and seafood in Croatia rose by eight percent between June 2024 and June 2025.

This is the largest increase in the EU.

Greece follows with a seven percent rise, while Portugal and Romania recorded increases of five percent.

In Spain, prices went up by three percent and in neighbouring Italy by two percent.

Several EU countries have seen no change in prices over the same period, including France, Austria, Slovakia and Slovenia.

Prices even fell in some nations, with Finland recording a four percent drop, Estonia two percent and Sweden one percent.

Croatians eat an average of 22.1 kilograms of fish per year, slightly below the EU average of 23.7 kilograms.

Prices have been steadily rising

Fish consumption in Croatia is far higher than in Hungary, where the average is 6.5 kilograms per year, but much lower than in Portugal, which tops the EU with 56.5 kilograms.

Croatians also eat almost twice as much fish as Slovenians, who average 11.7 kilograms annually.
