5 Unusual Museums to Check Out in Zagreb

Although at first you would think of Zagreb as a typical historically rich capital, and its history actually dates from Roman times to the present day, it offers quite unusual sights worth seeing. Among other interesting museums, we choose 5 unique ones you should definitely check out when in Zagreb.

Zagreb is also home to the first museum of lyophilized mushrooms in Croatia.

There are over 1,500 different types of mushrooms at the museum, including dozens of newly discovered species. Each exhibit is labeled with a note if they are ‘poisonous’, ‘deadly poisonous’, ‘edible’ and even ‘very tasty’.

The mushrooms on display are real and have undergone the freeze-drying process to achieve their display state.

The Museum grew from a travelling exhibition of items deriving from broken relationships. An emotional breakup can be overcome by contributing to the Museum’s collection and everyone is invited to be part of this creative idea. It can be a therapeutic relief or just curiosity; in any case, it brings some kind of a comfort.

That’s why Museum is full of different objects, from a wedding dress, axe to handcuffs. It was conceptualized in Croatia by Olinka Vistica and Dražen Grubišić and since then has toured internationally. Last June it opened its second permanent display and it also opened in LA and is starting to pop up all over the world.

Here you will see something you won’t believe your eyes. Literally! The Museum display includes over 70 exhibits that will make you explore the world of illusions and experience the impossible. Optical illusions, Holograms, Infinity room, Rotated room are one of the fun things you can enjoy.

And a good fact is you can take photos with your personal camera so you won’t forget what you saw.

Technical Museum Nikola Tesla

The Museum, established in 1954 in Zagreb, follows in the tradition of the great science and technology museums in the world. In addition to the several thousand items on permanent display, the Museum has 10, 000 items in storage. A lot to see and learn!

Among them are objects of everyday use which are typical of the industrial era of the 19th and 20th century. The most popular in the Museum is the Nikola Tesla Demonstration Workshops which are available to visitors every day with guidance.

Mestrovic Atelier


Ivan Meštrović is the most important Croatian sculpture and artist widely known for his work. Actually, this atelier located in the charming historical Upper City was his home from 1920’s until 1942.

Here you can see his beautiful workspace with lots of lights and many of his sculptures he did in this period. Here is where he made famous monument The Indians which is now located in Chicago.
