46th Donkey Race [PICS]

Forget the Melbourne Cup, Kentucky Derby or the Great Northern steeplechase, one of the more interesting races meetings was held yesterday for the 46th year in a row in Croatia.

The 46th Donkey Race took place in the small village of Tribunj near Sibenik on the Dalmatian coast on Thursday in front of hundreds of spectators. The donkey race is organised by Croatian Donkey, an association formed to protect donkeys and Logorun Island (commonly known as Donkey Island). Logorun Island is believed to have become the first protected resort for donkeys in the world. Simun Popov on board his donkey beat off 15 other competitors to be crowned the 2013 winner.
