3 September 2020 – So far so good for Croatian tennis players at the 2020 US Open. Wins overnight to Borna Ćorić and Petra Martić means Croatia now has two players in the third round.
Ćorić was made to work in his second-round match at Flushing Meadows overnight as he came back from 2-1 down to beat Juan Ignacio Londero from Argentina 7-5, 4-6, 6-7, 6-2, 6-3.
The young Croatian hit 15 aces in the win and he now faces 4th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas from Greece for a place in the fourth round.
In the women’s draw, Petra Martić made easier work of her second-round match. The 8th seed was too strong for Kateryna Bondarenko, winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. She now faces Varvara Gracheva from Russia next.
Donna Vekić and Marin Čilić are in second-round action later on Thursday. Vekić faces Patricia Tig from Belgium, whilst Čilić meets Slovak Norbert Gombos.
