197th Samobor Carnival begins

One of the oldest and biggest carnivals in Croatia got underway last night in Samobor, just outside of Zagreb.

The 197th Samoborski fašnik – Samobor Carnival – is being held this year under the slogan Hokus pokus Eurekus and takes place until 21 February.

The carnival was opened last night on King Tomislav Square with the handing over power and key to the city from the city mayor Petra Škrobot and her deputy Petar Burić and the Free Carnival Republic was proclaimed and the square will become the Square of Carnival Giants until the close of the carnival.

In addition to the abundance of masked fun which will take place over the next 10 days, there will also be performances from musicians. 

Queen Real Tribute band will perform on Saturday, February 11, and Dalmatino will perform on Sunday, February 12. The second carnival weekend will start on February 17 with the concert of General Danger, on Saturday, February 18, Miroslav Škoro will perform.

On Sunday, February 19, Zvonko Bogdan will perform and on the last day of the carnival on Tuesday, February 21, Dražen Zečić will take care of the entertainment.

All concerts start at 8:00 p.m., except for Sunday concerts, which are scheduled from 5:00 p.m., and admission is free.

Samobor’s kindergartens, primary schools and numerous visiting groups, almost 2000 masked participants, will take part in the Samobor carnival this year.

On Sunday, February 19, starting at 11 a.m., the Srakotrk, a traditional costumed orienteering competition, will be held, which attracts a large number of participants every year.

The carnival race “Swift-footed Babaroge” will be held during the Samobor carnival, on the Square of Carnival Giants on Saturday, February 18, around 12:30 p.m., after the end of the kindergarten parade.
