Zagreb’s new public bike-sharing system, Bajs, has had a strong start, with figures from the first month showing high demand and positive public response.
Launched as a complement to the city’s public transport, Bajs aims to encourage sustainable mobility, reduce traffic congestion, and make daily commuting easier for citizens of all ages.
Stations have been strategically placed near schools, sports facilities, densely populated neighbourhoods, and along key public transport routes, making the bikes especially useful for the first and last kilometre of a journey.
In its first 30 days, Bajs registered more than 20,000 users, who collectively completed 22,520 rides. Riders spent over 650,000 minutes on the bikes and burned an estimated two million calories.
A record was set on 22 September, European Car-Free Day, with 1,153 rentals in a single day.
“We are pleased that citizens have embraced Bajs. I hope it will become part of the daily routine for as many people in Zagreb as possible. The system’s full potential will be seen once all bikes and stations are active. At the same time, we are developing cycling infrastructure to reduce the reliance on cars, which means less congestion, lower emissions, cleaner air, and less noise,” said Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomašević.
Currently, 500 bicycles are available across 43 stations, with the most popular locations being Trg kralja Tomislava, Jarun, and Vlaška Street.
The service operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and bikes can be rented quickly and easily through a smartphone app.

The next phase will see a major expansion. By the end of October, an additional 1,500 bikes will be added at 140 more locations, bringing the total to 2,000 bicycles across more than 180 stations.
The city will continue to monitor usage and adjust station distribution or fleet size where needed.
Bajs places Zagreb alongside other European capitals that have successfully adopted bike-sharing schemes as part of efforts to promote sustainable and efficient urban mobility.
