Work has officially begun on the long-awaited renovation of Zagreb’s Main Bus Station, the largest and busiest in Croatia, marking the first major overhaul in almost four decades.

Opened in the mid-1980s ahead of the Zagreb Universiade, the station has long shown signs of wear.

Each year, it serves around five million passengers, with up to 25,000 people passing through daily.

Now, after nearly 40 years, it is finally getting a much-needed upgrade, one that will make it fully accessible to all travellers, including those with disabilities, HRT reports.

The renovation project focuses heavily on improving accessibility. Three new lifts and a lifting platform are being installed, alongside 1,000 metres of tactile paving to guide visually impaired passengers.

Two ticket counters are also being adapted, one with an induction loop system for those with hearing impairments, and another lowered for wheelchair users.

“The majority of tactile surfaces on pedestrian areas have already been installed. As for the lifts, the shafts are in place and preparatory work has been completed, so we expect the installation to be finished by the end of the year,” Josip Krajina, Director of Zagreb Bus Station, explained to HRT.

The project also includes staff training to better assist passengers with disabilities.

“Our traffic service, available 24 hours a day, will be trained to accompany passengers with disabilities to their required destinations within the station,” said Ivan Rimac, Head of Passenger Services.

While part of the platform area is temporarily closed to accommodate the installation of lifts, replacement platforms have been set up to ensure normal operations continue without major disruption.

Valued at €480,000, the project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

By the start of 2026, Zagreb’s main bus terminal will welcome locals and visitors alike in a more modern and inclusive setting, marking a new chapter for one of the city’s most important transport hubs.
