Zagreb took another significant step towards a greener and more modern transport system this week as officials marked the completion of the first batch of 20 new low-floor trams and signed contracts for the purchase of an additional 20 trams and 62 electric buses.
ZET confirmed that all 20 Končar-made TMK2400 low-floor trams have now been delivered, completing a project worth €49.77 million.
ZET’s Marko Bogdanović highlighted that the new vehicles mark a clear improvement in reliability and comfort for passengers.
Mayor Tomašević noted that few cities can boast trams produced locally, adding that the upgraded fleet is expected to reduce congestion and air pollution while improving the daily commute for residents.
New Contracts Worth Over €111 Million
Two major EU-funded contracts were signed at the conference:
• 20 additional low-floor trams, valued at €55 million, with €43.99 million financed through the EU’s Competitiveness and Cohesion Programme. Delivery is expected in 2026.
• 62 new low-floor electric buses, worth €56.75 million, with €45.4 million supported by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. All buses are due by October 2026.
Minister Butković underlined that these investments are not a luxury but a necessity for easing congestion and advancing sustainable, quieter public transport.
Prime Minister Plenković added that the new vehicles significantly enhance safety and quality while forming part of a broader government effort to develop the capital’s transport system.

At present, ZET operates only four electric buses from an earlier pilot project. The new fleet of 62 electric buses marks the city’s first large-scale move towards zero-emission transport.
Mayor Tomašević confirmed plans for a full transition to electric mobility within the next decade, aiming to convert ZET’s entire fleet of around 500 buses to electric power.

Končar CEO Gordan Kolak expressed gratitude for the continued trust placed in the company, emphasising that the tram production partnership provides a vital reference for future international projects and supports the growth of Croatia’s domestic industry.

With the delivery of the first new trams and the signing of contracts for additional trams and buses, Zagreb and ZET are pressing ahead with an extensive investment cycle aimed at modernising the city’s public transport and supporting a cleaner, more sustainable future.
