The City of Zagreb has approved the continuation of the temporary use of public spaces for vendors from Dolac Market as part of ongoing repair works and preparations for a full-scale renovation of the city’s most iconic marketplace.

Under the decision, sales activities will continue at established temporary locations in Pod zidom Street, Ivana Tkalčića Street, Splavnica, and the western section of Ban Josip Jelačić Square.

These arrangements will remain in place while the City proceeds with further stages of Dolac Market’s restoration.

Before reaching the decision, the City conducted a survey among stallholders who normally sell at Dolac Market.

The survey ran for one week and was completed by 87 vendors, representing approximately three-quarters of all Dolac tenants, including occasional sellers.

The results were unanimous. All surveyed vendors expressed their support for remaining at the current temporary locations in Pod zidom, Tkalčićeva and Splavnica.

According to the City, the findings confirm that vendors wish to stay as close as possible to Dolac Market itself. This is particularly important as the indoor hall, fish market, and dairy section remain operational, helping to preserve the market’s traditional layout and maintain steady customer traffic.

Dolac Market underwent urgent repair works earlier this year after part of the plaster ceiling inside the main hall collapsed.

The emergency repairs were completed within the planned timeframe, allowing the hall to reopen in December. At the same time, preparations began for a comprehensive renovation of the entire market complex.

The planned full renovation is estimated to cost between €22 million and €25 million.

The project will include structural reinforcement, solutions to long-standing waterproofing issues, repairs to the upper concrete slab where outdoor stalls were previously located, as well as the full refurbishment and modernisation of market facilities.

As a symbol of Zagreb and the most important marketplace in the city centre, Dolac Market is set to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2030.
